The oldest-known device for telling time is also a favorite with people who want to add a very special accent to their gardens. The earliest and simplest form of sundial is the shadow stick. The time of day is judged by the length and position of the stick's shadow. As the sun moves through the sky from sunrise to sunset, the shadow of the gnomon rotates "clockwise." The shadow is shortest when the sun is directly in the south, defining local noon. A sundial indicates local solar time, which is time measured by the Sun at a given location; in general, this time differs from clock time.

The base plate of our sundial is titled at an angle equal to latitude, and the stylus is perpendicular to the base, which aligns it with the earth's axis. The base is then marked with regularly-spaced hour marks. All you have to do is position the stylus to point to true north. Many would say that sundial time is truer and provides more insight into the nature of our world than our artificially constructed clock time.

About The Materials We Use

Stainless steel is a generic term for a family of low carbon alloy steels containing 10.5% or more chromium. The corrosion resistance and other useful properties of steel are enhanced by increased chromium content and the addition of other elements such as molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen. Our German composition of 18/8 austenitic stainless steel, (18% Chromium, 8% Nickel) is used in a significantly thicker gauge than typical applications of its kind.

In addition, it has a self-healing property because of its specific chemical composition. A layer on the surface, only a few atoms thick, naturally forms and, with the assistance of oxygen from air or water, rebuilds itself when scratched. This is the reason why stainless steel does not require any coating or other corrosion protection to remain bright and shiny even after decades of use. It is also 100% RECYCLABLE.
